Bocadillos [Help Please]

These, according to the sign in the bake shop in Buenos Aires, are bocadillos. Vegetable-egg-rice-cheese-potato fritters, or rounded pancakes, made in many different ways, as you can see. And quite good.  

Now before you tell me that they’re not, that bocadillos are sandwiches, I know. I’m just reporting: This is what the sign said. And if I’d known that identifying them would be such a challenge I would have a) paid more attention and b) grilled the saleswoman about the weird name.  

But as I’m not going back to BsAs (as they say) any time soon, and as I’d like to make these, I’m wondering if any of you know what they are, exactly?

    I lived in Argentina for a year during college. My host mom used to make them. They’re called buñuelos.

    They look like latkes to me. South American technicolor latkes, perhaps, but latkes just the same.

    Just another one of those food terms that gets mixed up over time and distance. Mexican and Spanish tortillas are of course very different, too.

    I can still smell the fresh baked bread in Toledo that got me totally hooked on bocadillos with tortilla… there is just nothing that compares!

    Mark, bocadillos can also be translated into "small bites" which makes perfect sense in this case.

    Bocadillo in Argentina means appetizer, it is something you serve in a picadita, also called buñuelos or croquetas, depending on the region. Google has a lot of recipes for them. For Argentinians, bocadillo has never meant sandwich.

    For Cubans, these little appetizers are called Bocaditos or Frituritas (little bites, little fritters). We serve them more as side dishes than apps. My mom makes them out of corn, malanga (taro), yuca, boniato (white sweet potato), even codfish. They are essential to a good Cuban meal. At mom’s house for birthdays the "birthday person" let’s mom know what they want her to prepare for everyone. For example, my husband, un Yankee, recently requested his favorite, picadillo, black beans, white rice, avocado/mango salad and malanga frituras.
